  • Hello, I'm Celia Hatton and welcome to NewsHour from the BBC World Service,

  • coming to you live from London.

  • We're starting the programme today in Iran,

  • where the most intense street protests we've seen in years continue to unfold in the country of 91 million people.

  • Information is difficult to obtain.

  • The internet and phone networks remain shut down,

  • but all signs point to an intensifying crackdown against the demonstrators by the authorities.

  • And despite the blackout, some videos have made it out of the country.

  • This video from Friday night shows a burning mosque in Tehran next to the excited crowd you can hear here.

  • State media confirmed the mosque had been burned and Iran's Revolutionary Guard issued a statement saying the military would protect public property.

  • And earlier today, Reza Palavi, the son of Iran's late Shah,

  • said he was preparing to return to Iran.

  • He called on Iranians to keep coming out onto the streets.

  • Your renewed and magnificent presence in the streets across Iran on Friday evening was a crushing response to the threats of the treacherous and murderous leader of the Islamic Republic.

  • In this regard, I call on workers and employees in key sectors of the economy,

  • especially transportation, oil, gas and energy, to begin a nationwide strike.

  • I also ask all of you, today and tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday, this time from 6pm,

  • to come into the streets with flags, images and national symbols,

  • and to claim public spaces as your own.

  • Parham Gobadi is a reporter from BBC Persian,
