  • So we are going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe,

  • proper and judicious transition.

  • And it has to be judicious because that's what we're all about.

  • In the unlikely event that you didn't already know, according to the American president,

  • the United States is now running not just the United States, but now Venezuela too.

  • That's a country of 30 million people.

  • But what does all this actually mean?

  • And having spent several months on this show trying to unpick what was motivating Donald Trump's interest in Venezuela?

  • Is it drugs?

  • Is it oil?

  • Is it toppling a dictator?

  • Do we finally have an answer?

  • From the BBC, I'm Tristan Redman in London.

  • And I'm Asma Khalid in Washington, DC.

  • And today on The Global Story, what's next for Venezuela?

  • Happy New Year, everyone.

  • Happy New Year, Asthma.

  • Happy New Year to you.

  • I mean, so much for a quiet return to business as usual.

  • It's definitely not that.
