Hey, I'm Josh Spiegel, host of the podcast Lunatic in the Newsroom.
If you enjoy journalism that drifts into mild panic, wild overthinking,
and a guaranteed nervous breakdown, Lunatic in the Newsroom is for you.
It's news like you've never heard before.
The only newsroom with a panic button.
You'll laugh, you'll cry, and gasp in horror as the show spirals completely out of control.
It's not just news, it's emotionally unstable.
Lunatic in the Newsroom.
Listen today.
From Booksmart Studios, this is Lexicon Valley, a podcast about language.
I'm Mike Vowalo.
I don't know if we needed a new term for online content that is designed to make us angry,
but we got one.
Social media is rage bait.
That's pretty much what it is.
Apart from a few, I guess, inspirational posts here and there, it's mostly rage bait.
According to researchers at Oxford University Press,
rage bait increased threefold in usage over the past 12 months and was chosen as their word of the year.
Fiona McPherson is an editor on the New Words team for the Oxford English Dictionary.
She joins me to talk about Rage Bay and some of the other contenders on their shortlist.
