18 分钟Hey English learners, welcome to another phrasal verb episode.
I hope you're ready to practice your English and learn a couple new phrasal verbs in today's episode.
We're going to look at two phrasal verbs today and one of them has a couple different meanings.
So we're going to look at two meanings for that phrasal verb.
The first phrasal verb is cash in on.
So when you cash in on something,
we're saying that you take advantage of a situation in order to make money.
For example, I could say he cashed in on their ignorance.
Here I'm saying that the person took advantage of their ignorance in order to make money.
Maybe He deceived them somehow because they were ignorant of some fact or something,
but he took advantage of that situation to benefit himself to make money.
So that's cash in on.
And then the other phrasal verb is catch on and we'll look at two different usages of this one.
The first meaning of catch on is to become popular,
not for people really, more for things, ideas, styles, etc.
For example, I could say that idea never caught on.
What I'm saying here is that idea never became really popular.
it never gained momentum, really.
And the other usage of catch on that I wanted to go over is to understand or realize something usually after a long time,
like before you didn't realize it, you didn't understand for a while, and then you did.
