单集文稿 ...

  • Hey English learners, welcome to another phrasal verb episode.

  • I hope you're ready to practice your English and learn a couple new phrasal verbs in today's episode.

  • We're going to look at two phrasal verbs today and one of them has a couple different meanings.

  • So we're going to look at two meanings for that phrasal verb.

  • The first phrasal verb is cash in on.

  • So when you cash in on something,

  • we're saying that you take advantage of a situation in order to make money.

  • For example, I could say he cashed in on their ignorance.

  • Here I'm saying that the person took advantage of their ignorance in order to make money.

  • Maybe He deceived them somehow because they were ignorant of some fact or something,

  • but he took advantage of that situation to benefit himself to make money.

  • So that's cash in on.

  • And then the other phrasal verb is catch on and we'll look at two different usages of this one.

  • The first meaning of catch on is to become popular,

  • not for people really, more for things, ideas, styles, etc.

  • For example, I could say that idea never caught on.

  • What I'm saying here is that idea never became really popular.

  • it never gained momentum, really.

  • And the other usage of catch on that I wanted to go over is to understand or realize something usually after a long time,

  • like before you didn't realize it, you didn't understand for a while, and then you did.
