A new US security strategy warns that Europe faces “civilisational erasure” and calls on Europeans to shoulder more of the burden for defence. It comes as the German parliament votes to introduce voluntary military service; we hear from a student protesting the change. Also, a big deal in Hollywood, as Netflix agrees to buy the film and streaming services of Warner Bros; and travel chaos in India as the country's largest airline IndiGo cancels hundreds of flights over new rules for pilots. • Hello and welcome to News Out from the BBC World Service.

  • We're coming to you live from London.

  • I'm James Kamarasami.

  • And we're going to start today with the new US National Security Strategy that was published overnight.

  • A 33-page document largely confirms some of the big changes to US foreign policy under the Trump administration that we know about.

  • But since it shapes the global news agenda on a daily basis,

  • we thought it was important to devote a bit of time to it today.

  • Well, as for that daily impact on the program,

  • we'll be hearing about the consequences of the US focusing on security in its backyard.

  • What some say is an updated version of the 19th century Monroe doctrine,

  • which said that the US would protect its sphere of influence in the Americas and about the consequences of Europe being urged to take primary responsibility for its own defense.

  • In the last couple of hours,

  • Germany's become the latest European country to back reintroducing a form of conscription.

  • We'll hear later how that vote in the German parliament is going down with some of those young people who might be affected by it.

  • Let's start

  • though with the strategy itself and we can speak to someone Who's in a good position to help us understand the Trump administration's thinking?

  • That's because this strategy is predicated very much on the idea of America First.

  • Robert Wilkie, co-chair of the American Security at the America First Policy Institute.

  • He was Veterans Affairs Secretary in the first Trump administration.

  • He's also served in the White House under previous Republican President George W.
