Hong Kong officials have held a moment of silence at the start of a three-day mourning period to remember those killed after the city's deadliest fire in nearly 80 years. At least 128 people are now known to have died in the fire, which engulfed seven tower blocks on Wednesday. A further 79 were injured and dozens remain unaccounted for. Eight people have been arrested on suspicion of corruption over the renovation works the blocks had been undergoing. Three others were detained on manslaughter charges. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but officials have said it spread up and between the blocks rapidly because of flammable materials placed on their exterior. • The authorities say around 200 people are still missing.

  • stood in silence for three minutes at 8:00 AM local time and flags have been flown at half-mast.

  • Paul Marriott works as a teacher at Loting Pong Secondary School.

  • He told me what he saw.

  • I will just kind of go through what went down.

  • So I teach a technology subject at the school

  • and we do have quite a few little fires little smokes coming out of the hill from time to time.

  • What happens is sometimes there are little bushfires,

  • sometimes people drop lit cigarettes and sometimes people will burn sacrifices and stuff to their idols.

  • So what happened was I was having a lesson I just finished.

  • I was doing my curriculum stuff in my room at the school in Tai Po and I walked outside just to stretch my legs.

  • And I had about three of my students say to me,

  • "Mr. Marriott, Mr. Marriott, there's all that smoke, someone's causing a fire."
