Learning to read empowers people, reduces poverty and increases their job chances. Yet more than 700 miliion adults are illiterate, the majority of them women. We look at innovations to help adults learn how to read from flatpack classrooms in flood-prone regions of Bangladesh, to an app teaching tens of thousands in Somaliland. Plus how adults in the UK are improving their reading skills thanks to an army of volunteer teachers using a method developed in prison. People Fixing The World from the BBC is about brilliant solutions to the world's problems. We release a new edition every Tuesday. We'd love you to let us know what you think and to hear about your own solutions. You can contact us on WhatsApp by messaging +44 8000 321721 or email peoplefixingtheworld@bbc.co.uk. • This BBC podcast is supported by ads outside the UK.

  • Hey there, this is Myra.

  • Now,

  • this week I want to take you back to a program we looked at a while ago that's about getting more adults to be confident readers.

  • Just to mention, since we first shared the episode with you,

  • one of the projects we looked at from Bangladesh called Friendship won the International Earthshort Prize this year for some of their work in education.

  • A massive congratulations to the entire team.

  • Now,

  • let's have a listen to this and some of the other ideas we came across on how literacy can change a life.

  • It's another great week here on People Fixing the World from the BBC World Service

  • because we get to talk about projects making our world a better place.

  • I'm Mayra Anubhi and today we're finding out about ways to get more adults to start reading and writing.

  • really enjoy reading

  • because it just transports me to a whole new world where I can learn things about people and just life in general.

  • It also really helps me pass time when I'm on long trips or just on my commute to work.

  • But reading isn't just a nice thing to do.

  • It's crucial to everything else in my life.

  • So for example,

  • I wouldn't be able to buy stuff at the supermarket because I wouldn't be able to read the labels.

  • And it would be hard taking medication or helping my children with their schoolwork.
