Polls are opening this hour on the East Coast, including in Virginia and in New York.
In New York City's mayoral race, President Trump has endorsed former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Cuomo is running as an independent.
He's opposing Democratic nominees are on Mamdani and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Cuomo is discounting the presidential endorsement saying Trump is trying to beat Mamdani.
Polls are opening now in New Jersey, too.
From member station WNYC, Mike Hayes says New Jersey has seen a surge in early voting.
740,000 New Jerseyans voted early in person in this year's governor's race,
according to the state's division of elections.
That's more than triple the number of early voters from the 2021 governor's election.
Combined with mail-in ballots, more than 1.2 million New Jerseyans voted before Election Day.
Democrats hold a 280,000 voted advantage for ballots cast so far.
But Republican strongholds in South Jersey saw some of the best early voting turnout,
an indication that both parties are motivated to turn out this year.
