We begin in Syria where Islamic State fighters have regrouped in the wake of the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime and are increasing their attacks on the Kurdish controlled northeast of the country.
When the IS caliphate fell several years ago some 8,000 suspected fighters were imprisoned in Syria and thousands of their relatives were herded into makeshift camps in desolate conditions.
Some countries have repatriated their nationals but many from the UK have been stripped of their citizenship and are still in Syria.
