  • We begin in Syria where Islamic State fighters have regrouped in the wake of the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime and are increasing their attacks on the Kurdish controlled northeast of the country.

  • When the IS caliphate fell several years ago some 8,000 suspected fighters were imprisoned in Syria and thousands of their relatives were herded into makeshift camps in desolate conditions.

  • Some countries have repatriated their nationals but many from the UK have been stripped of their citizenship and are still in Syria.
