  • I'm Georgina Godwin.

  • My guest today is the Asia editor of The Times and The Sunday Times,

  • a long time foreign correspondent covering Japan and Asia for over 30 years.

  • After graduating from Oxford,

  • his interest in the Far East was sparked by a trip to Japan in 1986 that he won on a television quiz show.

  • He's now based in Tokyo.

  • He's the author of several works of nonfiction,

  • including Time of Madness and People Who Eat Darkness,

  • The Fate of Lucy Blackman and Ghosts of the Sonami,

  • a moving account of the 2011 earthquake which caused powerful tsunami waves on the coast of northeast Japan.

  • He's now written his first novel in The Green Heart.
