Hello,
we're recording this episode of newscast on Thursday the 16th of October and today the Institute for Fiscal Studies,
the think tank that looks at the public finances,
published its green budget where they look ahead to what the chancellor might say and some of the things she'll have to weigh up in her own budget in November.
And they warned that doing the bare minimum the budget would risk another fiscal groundhog day next year.
In other words,
ducking difficult decisions now means just having to address the same set of decisions next year.
That's the serious bit.
We then thought, well, hang on, in the spirit of Groundhog Day,
what was on newscast on the 16th of October 2024?
And it turns out it was very similar to what's going to be on today's episode of newscast,
because we had quite a long chat about the economy with Faisal Islam.
I mean, when they made that film, they were really onto something.
And let's see what we can get onto in this episode of newscast.
