The footballer David Beckham was cast away by Kirsty Young in 2017. Born and raised in East London, he spent hours as a child kicking a ball around at the local park with his father. At the age of seven, he played for his first team, Ridgeway Rovers, before coming to the attention of Manchester United. He spoke to Kirsty about how his love of football – and fashion – started at an early age. You can listen to the full episode on BBC Sounds.

  • Hello, I'm Lauren Laverne and this is Desert Island Discs postcards.

  • Funny, moving and memorable moments from those who've been cast away to our imaginary Desert Island.

  • This postcard comes from the footballer David Beckham who spoke to Kirsty Young for our 75th anniversary programme in 2017.

  • My very earliest memory was My mum taking me to football all the time.

  • My dad was working as a gas-fitter.

  • So my mum did a lot of the training sessions, did a lot of the games at the weekend.

  • And my dad, you know, day after day, week after week,

  • She was a hairdresser So she would do that till 11 12 at night You have said of your dad that all the hours that he gave you and all the time he took with you you said he was a bit of a task master.

  • It was tough love, was it?

  • Did he tick you off?

  • Without a doubt, it was tough love, you know?

  • And I remember playing for Ridgway Rovers on a Sunday morning, and if I had a bad game,
