  • The Israeli military says the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel has come into effect.

  • Israel says it's getting ready for the return of hostages and pulling back its troops in accordance with the plan.

  • But Israel says it will be ready for any new threat.

  • 200 U.S. troops will be heading to Israel to help monitor and implement the Gaza ceasefire.

  • NPR's Quill Lawrence reports the troops will not be on the ground in Gaza.

  • U.S. troops with expertise in logistics will set up a civilian military coordination center in Israel to help with the expected flood of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

  • The narrow strip of land has been subjected to intense bombardment for two years as the Israeli army sought to eliminate Hamas after the October 7th surprise attack on Israel.

  • That initial attack killed more than 1,200 people, mostly Israeli civilians.

  • The ensuing war has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians,

  • according to Gaza's health ministry, also mostly civilians.
