Last night, we reached a momentous breakthrough in the Middle East,
something that people said was never going to be done.
Today, speaking to the press at a cabinet meeting,
President Donald Trump shared details of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.
We secured the release of all of the remaining hostages,
and they should be released on Monday or Tuesday.
And he said he hoped the peace would be permanent.
We ended the war in Gaza and really, on a much bigger basis, created peace.
And I think it's going to be a lasting peace, hopefully.
I talked to my colleague, Shandy Race, who covers the Middle East.
And how significant is this moment?
It's huge.
I never thought that all the hostages would come out.
So it's massive.
And it certainly ends one part of the horrific chapter that began on October 7th, 2023.
But there's obviously a whole other part of the deal that's going to be a lot more complex and difficult to get over into the final stages.
Welcome to The Journal, our show about money, business, and power.
I'm Jessica Mendoza.
It's Thursday, October 9th.
Coming up on the show, after two years of fighting, an end is in sight for the war in Gaza.
