  • Hello, it's Lauren O'Vern and this is Desert Island Disks Postcards,

  • a selection of some of our most memorable moments from some of the thousands of people we've cast away to our imaginary desert island.

  • This postcard comes from the footballer Jill Scott.

  • We met in 2023 after she'd been part of the Lionesses winning team at the Euros the previous year.

  • It's great that young girls today could dream of becoming a successful footballer,

  • but when Jill was starting out in her career,

  • the women players had to settle for second hand kit and miserly wages.

  • We used to get the men's handy down,

  • so in pre-season this big black bag would arrive and it would have all the men's kit off the year before,

  • so you kind of of be scrumming through this bag,

  • just trying to find someone who had your same initials.

  • There was this physio,

  • I think it must have been about 60 at the time and he was called Jockey Scott,

  • so it was a J and an S, so I would find it.

  • But I remember there were these red,

  • red-farty jumpers that had gone pink

  • because they'd been through the wash that many times and we had these shorts and obviously I was quite a tall skinny thing and these shorts were like basketball shorts on us but we were so happy to just take that kit.

  • home and feel like you were part of something.

  • So you've been in Sunderland for a year and it was then that you joined the Everton Ladies team.

  • Now that is a three hour drive each way from Sunderland to get over to Liverpool.
