单集简介 ...

In 2023, the comedian and writer Adrian Edmondson was cast away by Lauren Laverne. Adrian met his comedy partner, the late Rik Mayall, at university. They bonded over their shared interests in double acts, violent slapstick and the plays of Samuel Beckett. It was the start of a long performing partnership and friendship. Adrian spoke to Lauren about the creative process behind the anarchic TV comedy and long-running touring show Bottom. You can listen to the full episode on BBC Sounds.

  • Hello, I'm Lauren Laverne and this is Desert Island Discs postcards.

  • What's this?

  • I hear you cry?

  • Well, each year we take a short break.

  • So we thought this would be the perfect time to revisit some of the thousands of people we've already cast away.

  • But where to start?

  • Well, this is where the postcards will help.

  • We'll feature funny, moving and memorable moments every weekday.

  • We start this week with the comedian and writer Adrian Edmondson, who I interviewed in 2023.

  • Here he is, talking about creating the hit series Bottom with his comedy partner,

  • the late, great Rick Mail.

  • It's two losers, one aspirational, one bluntly philosophical and violent,

  • and they have no one but each other.

  • And they live in a squalid flat and never meet women.

  • That about sums it up.

  • I had that very bleak, becket-like feel,

  • which took the two of you back to what you bonded over first at Manchester University.

  • And then in 1991, you both performed Waiting for Godot in London's West End.

  • That must have been a real full-circle moment for you both.

  • Yeah.
