Israel's military says it's still operating in Gaza City and has warned Palestinians it's too dangerous to return. Earlier, President Trump told Israel to stop bombing the territory after Hamas said it accepted part of his peace plan -- including the release of all the hostages it's holding. But Gaza's Hamas-run civil defence agency says Israeli attacks continued overnight. Also in the programme: Japan's governing party has chosen Sanae Takaichi as its leader -- putting her on course to become the country's first woman prime minister; the Czech writer, playwright and former dissident Ivan Klima has died at the age of 94; and Peanuts, the comic strip that gave the world Snoopy and Charlie Brown, is 75 today! • This BBC podcast is supported by ads outside the UK.

  • Hello and welcome to News Hour from the BBC World Service, coming to you live from London.

  • I'm James Kamarasami.

  • It wasn't an unconditional yes, few people expected that,

  • but the decision by Hamas to agree to parts of Donald Trump's plan for peace in Gaza has certainly raised hopes in the region and beyond.

  • It was late on Friday when the group released a statement in which it pledged to immediately enter into negotiations for the release of all the remaining hostages under what it called the necessary field conditions.

  • It accepted an end to the war and agreed to hand over the administration of Gaza to what it called a Palestinian body of independence,

  • in other words technocrats,

  • based on Palestinian national consensus and supported by Arab and Islamic backing.

  • However, Hamas remains silent on other parts of the 20-point Trump proposal,

  • notably its own demilitarization and the offer of amnesty and safe passage to Hamas members who decommission their weapons.

  • Well, a few hours later, President Trump released this video message.

  • This is a big day.

  • We'll see how it all turns out.

  • We have to get the final... word down and concrete.

  • Very importantly,

  • I look forward to having the hostages come home to their parents and having some of the hostages.

  • Unfortunately, you know the condition they're in.

  • Come home likewise to their parents because their parents wanted them just as much

  • as though that young man or young woman were alive.
