The British Prime Minister Keir Starmer says Britain must defeat what he called the "rising hatred of Jewish people", after a deadly attack at a synagogue.   • following what authorities are describing as a terror incident at a synagogue in Manchester this morning.

  • Two people were killed and other four are injured and still in hospital after a man attempted to enter the Heaton Park Hebrew congregation synagogue armed with a knife.

  • Apparently it was the security guard and members members of the congregation that prevented him from getting inside the building.

  • The suspect was shot and killed by police within seven minutes of the first call to emergency services.

  • Two other people have been arrested,

  • but the attack has shocked the UK and the Jewish community in particular.

  • Manchester has the second largest community of Jews in the UK after London,

  • with more than 28,000 living in the city.

  • Today is also the most important, most poignant day in the Jewish calendar.

  • Yom Kippur, the day of atonement,

  • a chance to reflect on the year that's passed ahead of a new start to the year ahead.

  • It's a day many Jews head to the synagogue, even if they don't regularly attend.

  • Well, tonight, the Prime Minister, Sakir Starmer,

  • addressed the nation and tried to reassure British Jews.
