President Trump has delivered a blistering speech to the United Nations General Assembly, telling European countries they were “going to hell” if they did not stop mass migration. We’ll analyse what the US president said and how it is being received in European capitals. Also on the programme: health groups push back against President Trump's linking of vaccines to autism; and Palestinians react to the wave of countries including France and the UK recognising their state. • Hello and welcome to NewsHour from the BBC World Service coming to you live from London.

  • I'm Shaima Khalil and we'll start in New York.

  • One of the key moments of the UN General Assembly is when the U.S. president takes to the podium.

  • The speech is seen as America,

  • setting the tone for how it sees the world and its role in its key events.

  • But President Trump's, in New York today,

  • appeared more in line with a MAGA rally speech than a global vision by the leader of the free world,

  • especially when he took aim at fellow leaders and allied countries.

  • If you're scratching your head at some of his remarks, you're not alone.

  • There were some humorous and frankly bizarre moments in a speech that went way over time.

  • I ended seven wars, dealt with the leaders of each and every one of these countries,

  • and never even received a phone call from the United Nations offering to help in finalizing the deal.

  • All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that, on the way up, stopped right in the middle.

  • If the First Lady wasn't in great shape, she would have fallen.

  • But she's in great shape.

  • We're both in good shape.

  • We're both stuck.

  • And then a teleprompter that didn't work.

  • These are the two things I got from the United Nations.
