单集简介 ...

For some time Donald Trump has been taking shots at the Federal Reserve. It's America's central bank and the institution that decides on interest rates and regulates the nation's financial system. In the main it operates independently of the White House and it's therefore no stranger to conflict when it comes to presidents and their economic agenda. Up until now, no president has ever actively tried to reshape its governance in the way that Donald Trump has, either by publicly insulting its chair, Jerome Powell, or attempting to fire one of its governors, Lisa Cook. But as ever when it comes to the U.S economy, it would have enormous ramifications if Donald Trump was able to gain effective control of the Fed. Why is he so keen to control the institution, and what would it mean for America and the world if it happened? • BBC Sounds, music, radio, podcasts.

  • Donald Trump has the most powerful economic institution in the United States,

  • heck, maybe even the world, in his sights.

  • America's central bank, the Federal Reserve.

  • He's talked about wanting to get rid of Jerome Powell,

  • the head of the Federal Reserve, said he would do that in a heartbeat.

  • I don't think he's doing the job.

  • He's too late, always too late, a little slow, and I'm not happy with him.

  • I let him know it, and if I want him out, he'll be out of there real fast, believe me.

  • Okay, so that was back in April.

  • Powell is still obviously around,

  • but he has escalated this fight with the Federal Reserve by trying to fire one of the bank's governors,

  • Lisa Cook.

  • Now- What happens

  • if Donald Trump is successful in taking over the Federal Reserve and putting all this new pressure on it?

  • What would it mean for the American economy?

  • What would it mean for the world's economy?

  • And we've talked a lot about Donald Trump pushing the limits of presidential power.

  • Would this be a fight where he finally hits that wall?

  • Welcome to AmeriCast.
