Hello and welcome to World Today.
I'm Zhao Ying.
The UK,
France and Germany have begun the process of re-imposing UN sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.
The move will trigger a so-called snapback mechanism under the 2015 nuclear deal.
The three European powers took the step in a letter to the UN Security Council on Thursday.
The council now has 30 days to decide whether to continue sanctions relief or let it expire.
The E3 said they will continue engaging with Iran diplomatically during this period.
The move follows a meeting in Geneva between European and Iranian diplomats earlier this week that failed to achieve a breakthrough.
Iran's foreign ministry has condemned the move,
calling it a provocative and unnecessary escalation that will be met with appropriate responses.
So with time running out for diplomacy,
what would a potential snapback of UN sanctions mean for Iran and its nuclear decisions?
And what impact could a collapse in talks have on an already fragile Middle East?
