China is urging Israel to immediately halt military operations in Gaza.
This comes after the United Nations confirmed a famine in the war-torn region for the first time.
14 members of the U.N.
Security Council, except the United States,
have issued a joint statement expressing shock and concern.
The statement says children are dying daily from malnutrition,
with famine expected to spread by the end of next month.
Nearly 1.5 million people face severe food insecurity and more than 40,000 children are at risk of death.
Calling it a man-made crisis,
the members urged an immediate and permanent ceasefire as well as unrestricted humanitarian access.
They also called on Israel to halt expanded military operations in Gaza City to prevent worsening the humanitarian catastrophe.
