  • Welcome to The World in 10.

  • In an increasingly uncertain world, this is The Times' daily podcast dedicated to global security.

  • Today with me, Tom Noonan and Stuart Willey.

  • For half of the 20th century,

  • the world lived in fear that nuclear weapons could spell the end of human civilization.

  • While that fear may have eased in recent decades, here in the 21st century,

  • concerns about artificial intelligence have rapidly climbed the list of potential threats to our survival.

  • Now, a leading arms control monitor is warning the combination of these two forces...

  • could accidentally trigger a nuclear war.

  • That warning comes from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute and their artificial intelligence specialist,

  • Jules Pallier, is our guest to unpack it all.

  • Jules, the risk and the uncertainty you say is greater than ever.

  • So what is driving this?

  • So what we are seeing is that...

  • There is an increasing interest in military artificial intelligence.

  • And AI in the military has many, many uses,

  • one of which is increasing the autonomy in weapon systems.

  • But what is interesting is that AI is also used in what is called decision support systems.

  • In daily life, these systems are very common.

  • You know, they help us choose what podcast to listen to, what movies we should watch.
