  • This is The Guardian.

  • This afternoon, an update.

  • Can Europe's leaders drag Trump back on track?

  • It's not every day that the most powerful leaders in Europe rip up their schedules and drop everything to fly halfway across the world.

  • But that's exactly what Keir Starmer and his counterparts are doing for Vladimir Zelensky today,

  • freaked out by what happened in Alaska between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on Friday.

  • Trump flew to Anchorage all guns blazing,

  • promising a ceasefire and threatening very severe consequences if the Russians didn't comply.

  • Instead, After three hours with Putin in the sub-Arctic chill,

  • he suddenly seemed in favour of a long-term peace settlement,

  • designed very strongly in favour of Russia.

  • That's why Starmer, along with a dream team of European heavyweights,

  • have invited themselves to the White House today,

  • where they'll back up Zelensky

  • as he pleads with Donald Trump not to agree any sort of deal with Russia without him.

  • The fact that all these leaders...

  • have torn up their schedules and flown out to Washington at very short notice shows how important it is and shows how alarmed they are about what happened in Alaska.

  • And it shows this is not just about Ukraine,

  • but it's very much a pivotal moment in which the future of European security will be decided.

  • From The Guardian, I'm Helen Pitt.
