  • I'm Georgina Godwin.

  • Now,

  • one of the reasons I am able to meet so many writers is that I travel to literature festivals all over the world.

  • Key to the success of these festivals is the curation process.

  • The talented artistic directors who can interpret the zeitgeist through across everything that's been published that year and who can craft an event that will bring in readers to listen to authors,

  • to buy books and to celebrate literature in all its glory.

  • In this episode, I want to introduce you to some of the people from New Zealand,

  • Australia, the UAE and Scotland who make this happen.

  • Let's begin with the Edinburgh International Book Festival,

  • which kicked off on August the 9th and will run until the 24th.

  • I spoke to the CEO and director, Jenny Niven.

  • I think for me that the idea of being able to have long-form,

  • nuanced, interesting conversations should be a bit of an act of hope.

  • an act of resilience, something that propels the conversation forward.

  • And while we could diagnose everything that is wrong and everything that is broken right now,

  • I would also like the work that we are doing to perhaps suggest some ways that that might be hopeful and how we can repair things.

  • So we're using the idea of repair just really as a framing to look at all sorts of different issues across the political sphere,
