Welcome to The World in 10.
In an increasingly uncertain world, this is The Times' daily podcast dedicated to global security.
Today with me, Tom Noonan and Alex Dibble.
Israel's security cabinet has approved a plan to escalate its war against Hamas and occupy Gaza City.
The Israeli military says it currently controls 75% of the Gaza Strip.
The UN thinks it's closer to 87%.
The areas it doesn't control are mostly made up of Gaza's biggest city and refugee camps.
and it's thought almost all of the two million Palestinians in Gaza are living in those areas.
Now Netanyahu says occupying Gaza City is the plan to defeat Hamas but critics both at home and abroad have described it as a disaster that'll lead to more bloodshed.
The Times' Israel correspondent Gabrielle Weiniger is our guest today to unpack it all.
Gabrielle, thank you for joining us.
Just talk us through this plan.
Where is Israel looking to occupy and how is it different to what it's been doing so far?
Well, it's a new area in the sense that Israel hasn't entered into the...
four main refugee camps in central Gaza and northern Gaza of Gaza City,
which are basically expanded refugee camps that became towns.
Israel has conducted limited raids in those areas over the last two years.
They've gone in and then they've gone out saying they've defeated Hamas and then they've gone in again.
It's also been under severe bombardment.
So it's not new in terms of, you know, it's not a fresh area where nobody's been before.
