Hello and welcome to NewsHour.
It's coming to you live from the BBC World Service studios in central London.
I'm Tim Frax.
President Trump received a letter today, or at least one was sent to him.
It was from a group called Commanders for Israel's Security,
former heads of Israel's security agencies and military.
The message was simple.
We urge you to end the Gaza war, they wrote.
Along with a brief letter asking Mr Trump to persuade his Israeli counterpart,
Benjamin Netanyahu, to do just that, end the war,
there was also a slickly produced video with some of those former top officials,
many of whom have very hard-boiled reputations,

a former head of the Mossad, Israel's external security agency,
saying no matter how good a military is, a war with no political goal is a guarantee of defeat.
All this at a time when there's plenty of reporting inside Israel that the prime minister is,
in fact, about to order an expansion of Israel's offensive in Gaza.
Let's hear first from one of the signatories of the letter to President Trump and also one of the people who appeared in that video.
He's Ami Ayalon, a former head of Shin Bet,
