Canada has become the latest major Western power to say it will recognise a Palestinian state in September
if certain conditions are met by the Palestinian Authority.

The Prime Minister, Mark Carney,
said the dramatic shift in foreign policy would happen in September as long as the Palestinian Authority carried out democratic reforms and held elections without Hamas.
Mr. Carney accused Israel of allowing a catastrophe to unfold in Gaza.
In the past week,
France has also said it will recognise Palestinian statehood and Britain has threatened to do so unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire.
At a news conference, the Canadian Prime Minister had this to say regarding Gaza.
Canada intends to recognise the state of Palestine at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025.
This intention is predicated on the Palestinian Authority's commitment to much needed reforms.
including commitments by the Palestinian Authority's President Abbas,
to fundamentally reform its governance,
to hold general elections in 2026 in which Hamas can play no part,
