Welcome to the A to Z English podcast.
My name is Jack and I'm here with my co-host, Sochul.
And today we are talking about contronyms.
And Sochul, do you know what a contronym is?
I do, Jack.
I actually had never heard this word Jack told me just before the podcast.
But as soon as he gave me examples, I knew exactly what he was talking about.
So it's kind of when we use a word that would typically have another meaning,
sometimes a negative meaning in a positive way.
So a good example of this would be something like dope,
where we usually would mean stupid, but we use it as a way to say cool.
in American slang.
Right.
Like the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the Disney movie has a character called Dopey.
And Dopey is stupid.
And so I think maybe the word dope, maybe it's older than that.
It is, I'm sure.
You call someone a dope, you're calling them stupid.
But that's the literal meaning.
But yeah.
