Welcome to The World in 10.
In an increasingly uncertain world, this is The Times' daily podcast dedicated to global security.
Today with me, Alex Dibble and Tom Noonan.
After weeks of deteriorating relations, Thailand and Cambodia have entered open conflict.
It's over a contested border region known as the Emerald Triangle,
which has been a source of tension for decades.
Soldiers started firing at each other.
That prompted Cambodia to fire rockets across the border and Thailand to carry out bombing raids.
Tim Horniak is covering the fighting for The Times and is our guest today.
Tim, just summarise if you can what has happened up to the time that we're recording this.
Well,
we've had an eruption in violence across the Thai-Cambodian border today with reports of 12 killed civilians,
it seems.
Now both sides accuse the other of starting the violence,
but what makes it perhaps a bit more serious is the use of airstrikes by the Thai military on targets in Cambodia.
Both sides have called for restraint,
but they're still saying they're willing to defend what they see as their sovereignty over this disputed border region.
Just give us a rundown of how we got here because this has been building for some weeks now,
hasn't it?
So it's a complex history that goes back a century or so.
