Get ready to hear from some of the most influential international figures in the social sciences.
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
Welcome to the London School of Economics.
My name is Richard Davis.
I'm a professor in the School of Public Policy.
I'm delighted to welcome you all here this evening.
Now, as you know, at these events, and some of you have been to them before,
you have to sort of start off by saying some nice stuff about the presenter and how they're a wonderful person.
And I'm sure it's always true.
But this evening it genuinely is true, and it's true for me personally.
Phil Cogan is not only one of the most respected financial and modern social,
political journalists in the country.
He's done a huge stint both at the Financial Times and at The Economist,
but he also played a very big role in my life.
I went from being a central banker and writing in a rather turgid way.
to working in an office right next door to Phil when I became a journalist and he was one of the key people that gave me advice during that time particularly on the sort of turgid style and encouraged me to be a bit more exciting I remember which worked out well for me and it's something that I'll always be really grateful for so I wanted to start out by saying thank you to Phil for the role he's played in my life.
On top of that he has very quickly and incredibly turned around a brand new book,
The Economic Consequences of Mr Trump.
It's a reference, the title, which I'm sure he will explain to us, I think a clever reference.
