4 分钟Welcome to the A to Z English podcast.
My name is Jack and I'm here with my co-host Sochul.
And today we are talking about contronyms.
And Sochul, do you know what a contronym is?
Do Jack I actually had never heard this word Jack told me just before the podcast But as soon
as he gave me examples,
I knew exactly what he was talking about So it's kind of when we use a word that would typically have another meaning sometimes a negative meaning in a positive way so a good example of this would be something like dope where We it usually would mean stupid but we use it as a way to say cool in American slang.
Right.
Like the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,
the the Disney movie is has a character called Dopey and Dopey is stupid.
And so I think maybe the word dope, maybe it's older than that, but it is, I'm sure.
But yeah, it's you call someone a dope.
I mean, you're calling them stupid, but that's the literal meaning.
But yeah.
If you said, hey, that that shirt is dope.
What does that mean?
Exactly.
It means the shirt is cool.
Yeah.
They like your shirt.
