The Supreme Court has denied an emergency request from Florida to let it implement a law which bars undocumented immigrants from entering the state.
NPR's Jasmine Guards reports the law imposes criminal penalties on immigrants without papers.
Florida officials have stated they hope to spearhead the Trump administration's immigration enforcement campaign.
As part of that,
this measure made it a state crime for unauthorized immigrants to come into Florida with a mandatory prison sentence.
Two nonprofits, the Farmworker Association of Florida and the Florida Immigrant Coalition,
sued to block enforcement of the law.
The Supreme Court's order was brief.
There was no written opinion.
In recent years, several states have passed similar laws, including Texas, Oklahoma, and Iowa.
Four of those, including Florida, have now been blocked by lower courts,
who say they interfered with federal immigration law.
