Texas Public Radio's David Marshall.
Martin Davies reports.
Lawmakers are meeting nearly a week after catastrophic flooding left at least 118 people dead,
including dozens of children.
The special session begins on Monday, July 21.
In Abbott's announcement,
he said in the aftermath of the devastating floods in the Texas Hill country that the state must ensure better preparation for such events in the future.
This includes legislation to improve early warning flood systems in flood prone areas throughout Texas and as well as relief funding for the impacted Hill Country.
Abbott is also directing the lawmakers to redraw the state's congressional map,
which would increase the number of Republican seats.
This could help preserve the GOP majority in the Texas House of Representatives after the midterm elections.
