  • The difficult mission of search and recovery is happening in Texas for those swept away in disastrous flash floods on the 4th of July.

  • Eighty-two people are dead, mostly in Kerr County.

  • Others are missing.

  • The victims include children who were away at summer camp.

  • Houston Public Media's Dominic Anthony Walsh reports the community there is close-knit.

  • Kerr County is home to just over 50,000 people,

  • but the rolling hills draw visitors from across the state for camping,

  • hiking, and tubing on the Guadalupe River, especially on holidays.

  • Donnie Moser drove in from Houston on Wednesday.

  • By Friday, he was trapped in his Airbnb without food and water.

  • But local residents offered him shelter.

  • This is an incredibly, incredibly sad situation.

  • But the way people just kind of took us in and helped us and just made us part of their family is it's just amazing.

  • He says it reminds him of how residents in Houston come together after hurricanes.
