Today I'm joined by one of New Zealand's most admired and quietly original voices,
now firmly in the spotlight.
He just won the 2025 Occam New Zealand Book Award for Fiction for his novel Delirious,
a story that's both sharply funny and profoundly moving.
a book about unravelling and reassembling, about connection,
family and the slippery business of modern life.
I was the international judge for this award and the decision was very quick and utterly unanimous.
Over the years, this writer has built a body of work that spans novels,
short stories, poetry, essays, song lyrics and scripts.
He's also helped shape the next generation of writers as director of the International Institute of Modern Letters in Wellington,
that creative powerhouse where some of New Zealand's finest literary voices have emerged.
Damien Wilkins, welcome to Meet the Writers.
Thank you for having me.
So we're talking here in Auckland.
The award night was a couple of nights ago.
It was very dramatic.
We'll come to that.
I first want to go back and just find out all about you,
where you grew up and what kind of world it was.
