The Japanese-American 100th 442nd Regimental Combat Team had fought through Italy and France,
suffering heavy losses and winning the reputation of heroic and fearless fighters.
Attached to the 36th Infantry Division under the command of Major General John Dalquist,
they had managed to liberate Briere and Bifontaine.
Batigued from liberating Briere and Biffontaine, and with only two days' rest,
they were once again called into action.
They were ordered to rescue the 1st Battalion of the Texas Division,
who had found themselves surrounded by Germans in the Vosges after General Dalquist recklessly sent them up a hill without the necessary artillery or support.
