  • Welcome to Macro Musings,

  • where each week we pull back the curtain and take a closer look at the most important macroeconomic issues of the past,

  • present, and future.

  • I am your host, David Beckworth,

  • a senior research fellow with the Mercatus Center at George Mason University,

  • and I'm glad you decided to join us.

  • Our guest today is Mark Blythe.

  • Mark is a professor of international economics at Brown University and along with his co-author has put out a new book titled inflation a guide for winners and losers Mark joins us today to discuss his new book on the winners and losers from inflation and why it is still relevant going forward Mark welcome to the podcast.

  • It's great to be with you It's good to have you on and now we have a common connection on this podcast.

  • Eric Lonergan was a past guest several episodes and the two of you published this amazing book in 2020 called Angry Nomics.

  • Quickly tell us about that book before we get into your current one.

  • Sure.

  • This shows you our publishing genius.

  • We managed to write a book together and release it in a pandemic when the bookshops were closed.

  • So the basic thing was there was a paper that came out around 2016,

  • big macro-historical paper.

  • And it said that when you have banking crisis,

  • just wait and you will have basically pretty nasty right-wing politics following it.

  • And we thought, wow, that's super interesting.

  • What's up with that frequency?
