President Trump and Senate Majority Leader John Thune met privately after Trump's massive tax cut and spending bill hit a series of setbacks on Thursday.
NPR's Claudia Grisales reports Senate Republicans are struggling to take up the legislation.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune privately told his GOP conference that he does not currently have the 50 votes needed to pass a massive spending package,
according to a source granted anonymity to discuss the details of a private meeting.
The update came after the nonpartisan Senate parliamentarian told Republicans that several key tax provisions have to be removed from the bill.
That marks a major blow to Republican efforts to cut spending to pay for the plan.
It carries the bulk of President Trump's domestic agenda.
Trump has pushed congressional Republicans to get the legislation to his desk by the 4th of July holiday.

Members of the House are expected to receive a classified briefing today from the Trump administration on the recent U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Senators were briefed on Thursday.
The White House and Pentagon are calling the strikes successful,
but lawmakers from both parties are demanding answers.
