Hello and welcome to NewsHour from the BBC World Service coming to you live from London.
I'm Julian Warwick.
Even by recent standards this has been a remarkable day in the conflict between Israel and Iran Overnight there was heavy fire exchanged by both sides with a number of people reported to have been killed But then in the early hours of the morning US time President Trump posted on social media that a ceasefire was coming into effect The Israelis said they supported it and the Iranians said they would stop their attacks
if Israel did the same But then came doubts.
The Israeli military said it had identified missiles launched from Iran and intercepted them over northern Israel.
For their part, Iran denied firing any missiles,
but the Israelis said they would respond with force.
Speaking in very direct language before taking off for the NATO summit in the Netherlands,
President Trump said he was particularly angry with Israel,
but that he also blamed Iran for violating the ceasefire he'd announced.
We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the **** they're doing.
Do you understand that?
Well, suffice to say that wasn't bleeped when it went out live on many US television networks.
In more recent remarks made to reporters during his flight to Europe,
Mr. Trump was asked if he wanted regime change in Iran.
No, I don't want it.
I'd like to see everything calm down as quickly as possible.
regime change takes chaos and ideally we don't want to see so much chaos so we'll see how it does you know the iranians are very good traders very good business people and they got a lot of oil they should they should be fine they should be able to rebuild and do a good job they're never going to have nuclear but other than that they should do a great job well our correspondent ioni wells is in jerusalem prime minister netanyahu has been speaking what's he said He has given an address to the nation where he has said that this ceasefire can now be described as a historic victory.
And he said that Israel has removed, in his words,
two immediate existential threats, a nuclear threat and a ballistic missile threat,
