  • Late on Saturday evening, Donald Trump, flanked by three senior members of his government,

  • announced to the American people that US bombers had dropped the largest non-nuclear weapons in America's arsenal on three nuclear sites in Iran.

  • Tonight I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success.

  • Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated.

  • Setting any possible weapons program back, the administration claims by years at least.

  • What we did is we destroyed the Iranian nuclear program.

  • I think we set that program back substantially and we did it without endangering the lives of the American pilots.

  • The Trump administration is already taking its victory lap and signaling to Iran the U.S. has accomplished its mission.

  • It's not planning any more strikes.

  • It does not want to be dragged into another Middle Eastern war, it says.

  • But whether it wants to or not, the question now is, can it avoid it?
