Hello and welcome to The English We Speak,
where we explain phrases used by fluent English speakers so that you can use them as well.
I'm Feifei.
And I'm Beth.
Feifei, are you OK?
I am.
I just found out that a song I've been waiting to hear has just dropped.
I really need to go and listen to it.
Dropped?
Well, you'll know dropped, but can I just check you don't mean a song has just dropped on the floor?
No. In this context, dropped means something has been released.
It's a singer I love and they've been teasing this song, but I didn't know it was coming out today.
Ah, you didn't know it was dropping today.
So we can use drop for something new and exciting.
And it's not just songs that drop, a trailer for a film.
Film can be dropped or a fashion brand could drop a limited edition of something.
Yes.
And you know what?
A new season of my favourite TV series has just dropped.
