Barcelona in Spain is famous for its beautiful streets, lined with tall apartment buildings. But the architecture is a problem for many people who have lived for years in upstairs apartments but who now find the stairs unmanageable. In 2008, a survey found that in one district there were 300 people who could not leave their homes alone. A group of volunteers decided to do something about this and got hold of a special wheelchair with caterpillar tracks, so it can be used to take people up and down stairs. After an initial pilot scheme they launched a local service called “Let's Go Down to the Street”, to help elderly residents go shopping or meet up with friends. Sixteen years on, the service is offered across the city. Plus we visit a home for senior citizens in an unlikely location: a university campus. The Mirabella complex at Arizona State University in the US offers its residents the chance to sample the college lifestyle – from lectures to shows and sports fixtures. • This BBC podcast is supported by ads outside the UK.

  • Hi there, this is Myra and this week on the podcast I have a treat for you.

  • We are going back into the archives to listen to a wonderful episode we made about ways to make life easier and better for older people.

  • Welcome to People Fixing the World from the BBC World Service,

  • a programme that finds unique ideas changing our world for the better.

  • I'm Myra Anubi and today we're finding out about two different ways to help older people to be more sociable with a chair that can climb stairs and special university apartments.

  • According to the UN, by 2050, there will be double the number of people aged 65 and over.

  • And I mean, growing old is inevitable.

  • It's actually not a bad thing.

  • But often it comes with many changes to people's health and lifestyle.

  • In many parts of the world, retired people are very isolated,

  • which can affect both their mental and physical health.

  • And being less active at this age has been linked to chronic pain,

  • depression, dementia and many other health problems.

  • So the solution?

  • Well, for starters, we need to find other ways to get older people to be more active.

  • So how do you do this for people who might be frail and have challenges moving around?

  • This is where our first solution today can help.

  • It's happening in Spain,

  • an ageing country where one out of every five people is over the age of 65.
