Hello and welcome to NewsHour from the BBC World Service,
coming to you live from London with me, John Donison.
And we're going to start the programme in the United States.
President Trump has announced he's deploying troops, not overseas, but to Los Angeles.
2,000 National Guard soldiers have begun arriving in LA to help tackle protests against immigration control.
Well, Donald Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, has been speaking to Fox News.
This is about enforcing the law, and again, we're not going to apologize for doing it.
We're stepping up.
Guess what?
We're already ahead of the game.
We're already mobilizing.
We're going to bring National Guard in tonight.
We're going to continue doing our job.
We're going to push back on these people, and we're going to enforce the law.
But California's governor, the Democrat Gavin Newsom,
has called the move inflammatory and an attempt to create a spectacle.
The protests, largely from members of the city's Hispanic community,
have been relatively minor,
involving just a few hundred people up to now,
but have involved some violence towards local police.
