  • It's early on a Tuesday morning.

  • and I'm in the headquarters of the London Ambulance Service.

  • This is one of two locations in the city where staff take emergency calls and dispatch crews of paramedics.

  • The room I'm in is called the Tactical Operations Centre.

  • The people in here have an overview of the whole system,

  • including the flow of patients into and out of hospitals.

  • About 20 to 30 people sit or stand in front of banks of monitors.

  • Big screens on the walls show maps of London and data on emergency activity.

  • One has CCTV footage of specific road incidents.

  • I'm sitting with Chelsea Pike.

  • She's an advanced paramedic practitioner in critical care.

  • The 999 call she has just been listening into involves a young man losing a battle with a staircase.

  • She's also telling me that she can see a level of bony deformity and that actually there's some visible bleeding through the sock.

  • So I'm thinking this is probably a dislocated open fracture.

  • I'm suddenly glad I haven't had any breakfast.

  • Then, Pike rings back the caller for more information.
