Hello and welcome to NewsHour from the BBC World Service.
We're coming to you live from London.
I'm James Menendez.
And we're going to begin in Rome because this time on the programme yesterday,
Robert Prevost was locked away in the Sistine Chapel helping to choose a successor to Pope Francis.
Well, that successor turned out to be him.
And today he was once again surrounded by the chapel's magnificent Renaissance frescoes,
but this time celebrating his first Mass as Pope Leo XIV.
All the cardinals who'd chosen him and those who hadn't took part in the service.
This is what he had to say to them in his homily.
Through the ministry of Peter,
you have called me to carry that cross and to be blessed with that mission.
And I know I can rely on each and every one of you to walk with me as we continue as a church,
as a community of friends of Jesus, as believers.
to announce the good news, to announce the gospel.
Pablio then continued in Italian,
telling his audience that the church could help illuminate the dark nights of this world.
His election certainly brightened the day of his family.
Here are his two older brothers, John and Louis, talking about how they found out about the news.
I was reading a book.
