This afternoon, a quick update.
What is going on in India and Pakistan and how bad could it get?
Between 1am and 2am.
Indian Air Force planes carried out a series of very coordinated,
very systematic strikes on Pakistan.
Hannah Ellis Peterson is The Guardian's correspondent in India and Pakistan,
where 1.7 billion people woke this morning to news that India had launched what Pakistan calls an act of war.
Indian military, Indian armed forces have launched Operation Sindoor,
hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan.
They directed missiles and drones over the border into Pakistan to strike nine targets.
They made it very clear that no Pakistani military bases or military infrastructure were targeted.
They very much said this was only to target the terrorist infrastructure,
which they blame for militant activity over Indian borders.
The strikes, the largest for decades,
are India's response to a terrorist attack two weeks ago that it says Pakistan was behind.
Pakistan denies that.
It says 26 people, including several children,
were killed in last night's strikes and that its own response will be just as hard and come possibly within hours.
