President Trump will meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House today.
Tensions have been high
since Trump launched his trade war and said he wanted to make Canada the 51st U.S. state.
NPR's Deepa Shibaram has more.
Trump has called Mark Carney a, quote, nice gentleman,
and the two leaders have spoken on the phone twice in recent months.
But this meeting at the White House will be the first
since the Canadian election a week ago and comes as Trump's tariff war remains unresolved.
Carney, a liberal, made Trump a focus in the race,
arguing that Canada needs to be less reliant on the U.S. and forge its own path.
In a post-election speech, he said that Trump is trying to break Canada so that the U.S. can own it,
and he said that would never happen.
Trump has continued to insist that Canada should be a part of the U.S.
