  • We begin today's programme at an exciting moment after a hard-fought Australian election campaign.

  • Anthony Albanese's left-leaning government's staying on in power.

  • It's the end of a rollercoaster race.

  • For months, we've seen Mr Albanese battle for votes against the leader of the opposition coalition.

  • conservative Peter Dutton.

  • Earlier this year it looked like Mr Dutton's coalition was tipped to win but he began to lose that lead and the opinions changed toward the end of March.

  • It was a campaign dominated by concerns over the rising cost of living and a housing crisis with the threat of Donald Trump's tariffs looming in the background.

  • These voters in Sydney explained their thinking a bit earlier in the day.
