单集简介 ...

It’s 100 days since Donald Trump was sworn in for his second term as President of the United States. His campaign promise to end the war in Ukraine has yet to materialise, but Washington has brought both sides to the negotiation table. So is peace any closer, and should the White House be getting more credit? We’re joined by Sam Kiley, world affairs editor at The Independent, who has just returned from the Vatican where Donald Trump and President Zelensky met on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ funeral. And the former British ambassador to Ukraine, Judith Gough, gives her perspective on the current state of diplomatic talks. Today’s episode is presented by Lucy Hockings and Vitaly Shevchenko. The producers were Ben Carter and Laurie Kalus. The technical producers were Philip Bull and Mike Regaard. The series producer is Tim Walklate. The senior news editor is Sam Bonham. • BBC Sounds. Music, radio, podcasts.

  • It's 1,161 days since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

  • And Vitaly, over the weekend, the eyes of the world were very much focused on the Vatican.

  • Pope Francis being laid to rest.

  • So many world leaders were there, including President Trump, of course, and President Zelensky.

  • And Vitaly,

  • what a remarkable moment when he arrived and you heard this ripple of applause at this very solemn event.

  • Ah, loud applause for President Zelensky of Ukraine.

  • Wow.

  • The crowd is erupting for Zelensky.

  • And you don't often hear applause at funerals, but it happened this time.

  • Donald Trump had a front row seat near Pope Francis' coffin alongside his wife Melania.

  • President Zelensky was just 10 seats away from the US president.

  • And then shortly before the funeral started, Vitaly,

  • there was this extraordinary picture that we saw of President Trump and Mr Zelensky in this tiny corner of St Peter's Basilica.

  • just before the funeral, there they were sitting facing each other, leaning forward,

  • hands together in their laps, but they were staring right into each other's eyes.

  • And Vitaly, given the bad blood we've seen between these two men,

  • what really struck me is it was a very solemn moment, but it didn't feel like an angry one.

  • It felt like they were connecting and looking at each other very deeply.
